GUWAHATI, Nov 1 – Even after more than 48 hours have passed since a series of blasts rocked the State on Thursday, Assam Police continue to be clueless about the identity of the organisation behind the terror strikes, which claimed 81 lives, besides leaving over 200 injured. However, police claimed to have laid their hands on some specific clues and had also apprehended three persons from different parts of the State in the last 24 hours.
A couple of them were apprehended a few hours after police, with the help of Forensic Science Laboratory, unearthed the identity of the vehicles, which were used to plant bombs in Ganeshguri and DC court areas.
According to Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, both the vehicles used for explosion in Ganeshguri and DC court areas were Maruti 800 cars. “While one of them is owned by Bhikendra Saikia of Nagaon, the other was sold in Itanagar. In the Kamarpatty blast too, a Maruti 800 car was used,” Mahanta said.
Asked, whether the police department has been able to identify the group behind the blasts, Mahanta said, “ We are going step by step and are not ruling involvement of any group behind the blast. We are going in a professional manner,” he stated.
Police has so far apprehended three persons in connection with the serial bomb blasts, which include Bhikendra Saikia, the owner of the Maruti 800 (AS-O1-N-0327) used for explosion in DC court, Biswa Buragohain and Nazir Ahmed.
Police apprehended Biswa Buragohain of Dispur area, whose bike was used for planting the bomb in Bongaigaon blast site.
Meanwhile, Bhikendra Saikia, when questioned, told police that he had handed over the car to Pallavi Motors to resell it in July, 2006. Police, after this, have moved the authority of Pallavi Motors to make available the details of the person to whom the vehicle was sold.
It has also asked its counterparts in Itanagar to fetch them information about the other Maruti car that was sold from an Itanagar-based agency. The registration numbers of the other two vehicles used for triggering blasts in Kamarpatty and Ganeshguri (sold in Itanagar) area are yet to be ascertained.
Forensic expert Dr Padmapani, who himself made a visit to all the blast scenes, informed The Assam Tribune that all the three blast were of similar nature.
“The explosives used in the three blasts were RDX and ammonium nitrate. In the Ganeshguri blast, however, Programmable Time Delay (PTD) device was also used,” Dr Padmapani stated.
Another senior Assam Police official informed this correspondent that they have shortlisted the names of some of the injured victims of the blasts, who have seen the blasts from close proximity, and accordingly sketch of the suspects would be prepared.
“As some of the people are grievously injured, we are waiting for their recovery. Hopefully, we would be able to prepare the sketches in a day or two,” the official stated.
